Curriculum Intent:
St Columba aims to give children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society. The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters. St Columba use the Kapow Primary’s RSE/PSHE scheme of work which covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education), including the non-statutory sex education in Key Stage 2. The scheme also covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National curriculum (2014) that schools ‘should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE).’ Children’s learning through this scheme significantly contributes to their personal development from the Early Years to Upper Key Stage 2.
At our school, we use myHappymind as a whole-school programme to support children’s wellbeing, confidence, and resilience. The programme is built on scientific research about how the brain works and is designed to give pupils practical strategies for managing their emotions, building positive relationships, and developing a growth mindset. Each year group takes part in regular lessons and activities that focus on areas such as celebrating strengths, understanding feelings, and showing kindness to themselves and others.
Due to myHappymind being used consistently across all classes, it creates a shared language and approach that helps children feel secure and supported as they move through the school. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own progress, celebrate successes, and apply what they learn in everyday situations, whether in the classroom, on the playground, or at home. Through this, children develop lifelong skills that not only support their learning but also their overall happiness and mental health.
We also encourage families to be part of this journey. Parents and carers can access the free myHappymind parent app, which provides resources, tips, and activities to use at home. This helps to reinforce the strategies children are learning in school, creating a strong partnership between home and school and ensuring that pupils benefit from a consistent and supportive approach to their wellbeing.
