Design Technology

Curriculum Intent:

Here at St Columba we follow the scheme ‘Kapow’ to provide the children with an inspiring, rigorous and practical Design and Technology curriculum. The program is designed to promote children to become problem solvers by using their creativity and imagination to design, make and evaluate products which can be used in the real world and which solve real life problems. Through our Design and Technology lessons, we encourage children to research and explore existing products to understand their purpose and function before designing and making their own products which are fit for purpose.

Children are exposed to a wide range of media including woodwork, textiles and food, which will help children to develop resilience, confidence, skills and vocabulary across a wide range of areas. It is also our aim that our Design and Technology curriculum offers cross curricular links to maths, computing, science and art and design.

At each stage of learning, subject knowledge, key vocabulary and key skills are built upon from pervious learning, providing children with a comprehensive and progressive curriculum. By giving children these opportunities, experiences and responsibilities, at the end of their time at St Columba Church of England Primary School we aim for the children to be equipped to use these skills in our everchanging world so that they can be successful in later life.

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

•Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday

tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

•Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design

and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

•Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

•Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
