Growing futures, rooted in Love, Hope and Respect

Maths

Mathematics is an interconnected subject, in which pupils need to move fluently between mathematical concepts. The basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children, therefore at St Columba C of E Primary School, our aim is for all our children to think mathematically: enabling them to reason and solve problems in a range of different contexts.

It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. (National Curriculum 2014)

Our Maths curriculum embraces the Mastery approach to teaching mathematics. Carefully structured learning journeys are planned with an emphasis on the use of CPA (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) and a variety of representations and structures to develop children’s mathematical fluency. Precise questioning ensures all children’s learning is deepened, not just those who grasp concepts more quickly. This approach enables children to make rich connections across all mathematical domains as well as develop their fluency and mathematical reasoning and apply these skills in investigative and problem-solving contexts.

Throughout the year, children engage in a range of learning opportunities relating to real life contexts, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges, allowing the children to experience a sense of awe and wonder as they approach rich problems and investigations. Through promoting our St Columba values of Love, Hope and Respect, we encourage all children to develop a strong growth mindset and a belief that ‘we can all succeed in Maths’.
