Outdoor Learning

At St Columba C of E Primary School, we take pride in the unique and enriching experience we offer to our pupils.

We are very lucky to have extensive outside space which provides the perfect setting for our outdoor learning activities, not to mention providing a lovely, safe home for our school chickens.

These natural surroundings serve as an extension to our classrooms, fostering an environment that encourages curiosity, creativity and a connection with the natural world.  The benefits of outdoor education are manifold, promoting physical health, emotional well-being and cognitive development.

Key Benefits of Outdoor Education:

  1. Holistic Development: Our outdoor learning is designed to promote holistic development by fostering physical, emotional, and social well-being. Outdoor activities encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience, essential skills for life.

  2. Enhanced Creativity: The open and unstructured nature of outdoor learning stimulates creativity and imagination. Students have the freedom to explore, inquire, and create, fostering a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

  3. Improved Physical Health: Regular engagement in outdoor activities contributes to enhanced physical health. From building shelters to exploring trails, students develop coordination, strength, and overall fitness.

On the days your child(ren) have outdoor learning it is important they have the right clothing so they feel comfortable and are able to fully enjoy the experience.

Suitable Clothing: Children should wear long trousers (not jeans), a long sleeved t-shirt or shirt and an old jumper to protect against stings and bites.  Layers of old clothing are best.  Please note: Outdoor Learning clothes will get dirty

Hat and Suncream: Sunhat and suncream or warm woolly hat depending on the weather
